Trafalgar Day Act of Remembrance

The Greenwich Royal Navy Veterans Association

will be holding their annual

TRAFALGAR DAY ACT OF REMEMBRANCE

in East Greenwich Pleasaunce on

SATURDAY, 20TH OCTOBER AT 12-MIDDAY

Battleoftrafalgarpic

(The Battle of Trafalgar, 21 October 1805' by J.M.W. Turner, National Maritime Museum/Greenwich Hospital Collection)

The ceremony will mark the Battle of Trafalgar and honour the 3,000 sailors buried in the Pleasaunce.

Tuliptreeleaf_2In advance of the event a young Tulip Tree has been planted by the Council's Parks department in the dog-free zone to mark 150 years since the Pleasaunce was originally created as a burial ground. The tree is easy to recognise because of its distinctively-shaped leaves (left).

From 11am the Friends of East Greenwich Pleasaunce will provide refreshments and display some artefacts and mementos that the pupils of Halstow School have chosen to go in a time capsule to be buried near the newly-planted tree at a future date. The Friends also commissioned a mosaic plaque to go near the tree (see photo below), based loosely on an original design by Jane Lydbury, who also designed the Friends logo.

Back to business

We hope you're all having a lovely Summer break, but with the new term rapidly approaching it's nearly time to get back to business...

Here's what the Friends Committee is currently working on:

* Funded proposal for a memorial plaque and buried time-capsule to mark 150 years of East Greenwich Pleasaunce. We're currently liaising with the Council over siting and format.

* Arranging a meeting with Mike Neill, formerly head of the Liveability Project, to find out the latest on the Pleasaunce Cafe plans. We're very concerned and somewhat disheartended about the delay on this project. At one time we were assured that building work would have started by late Summer for completion in the Autumn. We'll keep you posted.

* Planning our pre-Christmas festivities in the park, probably to include carol singing, mulled wine, minced pies etc...Date to be announced.

Celebrating 150 Years of East Greenwich Pleasaunce

2007_pleasaunce_picnic_balloons_43Over 500 people enjoyed our picnic and fun day on Sunday 10th June to celebrate 150 years of East Greenwich Pleasaunce (see photo album, right, for more pictures).

Families from the entire community of East Greenwich converged on the small but historic park to enjoy the glorious weather, a leisurely picnic and the free-flowing 'Pleasaunce Punch'  - a particularly popular rum-based cocktail.

Steelband

The excellent Nostalgia Steel Band (above) provided the musical backdrop to a range of other entertainments, including circus skills, a fire engine, and a celebratory balloon release.

As ever, the cake and book stalls proved very popular, and this year there was also a Treasure Hunt, enthusiastically taken up by the children.

Annandale road local Charles Roper-Medhurst made a splendid cake to mark the occasion and after singing happy birthday it was cut up and shared out. Only the icing plaque remained...

Indian Bean Tree for the Pleasaunce

Treeplantingceremony_2Visitors to the Pleasaunce on Friday 20th April may have witnessed a small dedication ceremony.

Whenever a Director of one Greenwich Council’s Departments retires, they have a tree planted for them somewhere in the Borough. Richard Thompson (centre left) asked for his tree to be planted in the Pleasaunce.

Richard was the Director of 'Greener Greenwich' and had been working on the Cafe project.

The tree is a Catalpa Bignonioides (Golden Indian Bean Tree) and when fully grown should look something like this:
